WELCOME!
Thank you for visiting BKB Agri View to find out more about what Agri Tourism has to offer within the Cape Agulhas Region.
What is
Agritourism
In recent
years, travel has become much more than just ticking off the mandatory list of
local museums and tourist sites. Many travelers would
rather take their time when discovering new destinations. They want to meet
local communities in their natural environments and become more involved with
people living in rural areas. Primarily, agritourism is a style of travel that
takes place on a farm and usually offers the visitor the opportunity to help
with farm work and activities – thereby becoming familiar with local products
and services.
Agritourism
generally encompasses slower, more leisurely activities. It could include, for
example, a walk through the vineyards of a winery culminating in a tasting of a
variety of wines, or maybe a horseback ride along a river or across the fields.
It might even include taking a hay ride on the back of a tractor past flocks of
happily grazing sheep, or maybe you're keen to practice your
overland driving skills by traversing a difficult terrain on the farm. Other
activities might include tasting honey straight from the hive, picking fynbos
flowers with the farm workers, or even staying at a farm-based
bed-and-breakfast establishment that offers you the experience of true farm
hospitality – leaving you with lasting memories
for years to come.
As
commercialism and mass production become the standards by which we live,
agritourism gives people who
work in the agricultural sector a chance to share their work with the general
public. Some agritourism experiences allow guests to buy food products grown on
the farm or hand-crafted products made by the farmer, the farmer’s family or
the workers themselves. Purchasing these goods helps provide farmers with an
additional source of income other than farming. The farmers’ market is another
very popular showcase of only the best organically and naturally grown fresh
farm produce, and could include a variety of interesting arts, crafts and pure
wool products.
Life these
days is lived in the fast lane, leading to poor diets and little personal time
to handle the day-to-day stresses and challenges of urban life. Many city
children grow up without ever really knowing what the countryside is like or experiencing
interaction
with live farm animals. Agritourism, therefore, gives parents the opportunity
to introduce their children to something other than city life with it's
computer games, cell phones and mall activities.
Experience the BKB Agri View Tour
You can
experience just that on the BKB Agri View tour. The Agri View was started as a
joint venture between BKB (Boere Kooperatiewe Beperk) and Cape Agulhas Tourism
to offer visitors to the area a chance to discover farm life and
get back to basics. It will only take four to six hours out of
your day to experience life on a farm with all its offerings. You will learn
about the process wool goes through before it gets displayed on a catwalk in
Milan and enjoy a superb meal cooked in the
slow-food way, with good wine and good company, while
enjoying fresh air and breathtaking views.
